Ed Fatzinger was kind enough to battle through SoCal traffic to record a podcast at Lightpoint HQ in Thousand Oaks this week. Most of you know Ed possesses a vast amount of expertise in motorcycle data, and we discussed topics ranging from Kawasaki and Ducati to airbag vests, apps, diagnostic tools, and B.U.D.S.
BUDS = BRP Utility and Diagnostic Software, where BRP is Bombardier Recreational Products. Bombardier brands include Can-Am, Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo, Rotax, Lynx (snowmobiles), and a few others. Ed talks a little about the data they store in the Data Driven clip below (full episode to be released before long).
So, what models store data and how do we get it? From what I can find on the ever-trusty internet, the following models are BUDS-compatible.
Sea-Doo PWC from (2002+)
Sea-Doo Sportsboat from 2002 to final production
Ski-Doo (2005+)
Lynx (2005+)
Can-Am ATV / SSV (2004+)
Can-AM Spyder / Ryker (2007+)
It’s uncertain whether the recently launched electric motorcycles, the Pulse and Origin, will be covered.
Best I can tell, a kit like this will give you both the hardware and software necessary to extract the data (as you'll see there's an annual licensing cost). However, before buying and downloading, it’s worth reaching out to a BRP-experienced friend, like Ed or Steve Anderson.
Remember, without data you’re just another person with an opinion (wise words from William Edwards Deming), pursue the stuff with vigor!
Thanks for reading, keep exploring.

P.S. If you want to learn more about motorcycle data, I put everything I know into this fresh 2-hour, on-demand class.
