Today’s insight is courtesy of Tommy Sturdivan, who informed me of another super valuable heavy truck resource after reading last week’s email.
TruckScience is an impressive piece of software built to “calculate axle weights, dimensions, center of gravity and maximum payload to deliver safe, legal and efficient trucks.” Excepting their blatant disregard for the oxford comma, that’s an enticing offering. The two-minute video below gives a great shakedown of the program’s abilities, and they’ve got others that offer more info about their weight and CG calculations.
According to their FAQs, the chassis weights are generally “sourced from a spec sheet, proposal document, or body builder manual provided by the chassis manufacturer.” Not as ideal as measuring the unit yourself, but a close second.
I’ve been messing around with a trial license and have been impressed with the capabilities and functionality of the platform. With the ability to establish key dimensions, axle weights, CG location, and turning radius, as well as create detailed diagrams and reports, it seems like a powerful tool for the heavy recons among us. Having said that, I’m not one of those… so take my interpretation with a grain of salt!
Thanks for reading, keep exploring!
