Tesla made a major update to their dashcam system over the holidays, so I did a bit of testing yesterday to get a feel for it.

As of vehicle software version 2025.44.25, Tesla is now embedding Supplemental Enhancement Information (SEI) directly into the video stream… and the data are plentiful! Here’s what you get for every video frame:

  • Speed

  • Gear state

  • Pedal position

  • Steering wheel angle

  • Blinker status

  • Autopilot state

  • GPS location and heading

  • Tri-axial acceleration

On top of that, they released an official, open-source tool where you can drag and drop the videos directly into the browser to watch the video with the telemetry data synchronized and overlaid. You can even export a CSV if you want to performed a more detailed analysis. During my testing, the tool worked flawlessly.

As of ~2020, all Telsas come equipped with a USB drive set to record, so hopefully these are data we’ll all regularly get to put to use. Video + telemetry, it doesn’t get better than that!

Here’s to 2026! I hope it’s great one, both professionally and personally. Keep learning,
