There will be about 5,500 fatalities involving young drivers (15 to 20 y/o) this year in the United States. That’s 15 families shattered every day... and the numbers are on the rise.

As ADAS and crashworthiness improve, the trend will hopefully reverse. However, teens aren’t the most likely demographic to be piloting modern vehicles with all the bells and whistles.

A variety of driving monitors have been developed to help parents ensure their children are driving safely. Bouncie, Hum, MotoSafety, and Vyncs, all make OBD-II trackers that record speed, location and unsafe behaviors (keep an eye out for these during vehicle inspections).

Similar apps also exist, like Life360, MamaBear, and Famisafe (another viable source of data for recon). Studies suggest driving behavior improves when teens know their parents are monitoring their data… you know, the Hawthorne Effect.

Technology helps, but improved skill can save lives now. Young drivers who know how to detect potential hazards and respond are, no doubt, less likely to be involved in a serious collision.

To that end, Lightpoint is experimenting with ways to help. This year, we’re teaming up with Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School (TRSS) to provide scholarships to teens all over the country. Every $175 raised will send a young driver through their course, which is a combination of classroom and hands-on training that teaches vehicle control, emergency maneuvering, and situational awareness that can prevent a tragedy.

On Tuesday the 16th, 100% of our revenue will be donated to fund these scholarships. I’m hoping we can hit $5k, and my moonshot is $10k.

Use the coupon code SAVEALIFE this Tuesday when you buy a point cloud, motorcycle datasheet, or class, and we’ll donate the entire amount to TRSS. Get some data, save a life.

Thanks for reading, keep learning (and helping)!
