This book was out of print for years, with used copies listed for thousands of dollars. I remember seeing a copy listed for $18k.
I’m talking about Tony Foale’s Motorcycle Handling and Chassis Design. No other book has done more to shape my understanding of motorcycle dynamics. It’s written in plain, approachable language that allows mere mortals to grasp complex topics… and it’s finally back in print!
Want to know what really keeps a motorcycle balanced, or how a turn is initiated and maintained? Did you know the shape of a tire is largely responsible for lateral cornering forces? Do you fully understand trail and its effects? Are you curious about what causes instabilities like weave and wobble? Did you know the coefficient of friction between a tire and roadway can vary with contact pressure? Heretical, but true.
Spend a little time with this gem and you’ll have a better understanding of all the above, putting you in a better position to reconstruct motorcycle collisions with accuracy and confidence.
Thanks for reading, keep learning!
