Nearly 150 people joined in live for this week’s Speed from Video Webinar, and many of us finished off the session by exchanging thoughts on tools and techniques. Video extraordinaire Adam Cybanksi was in attendance and was kind enough to provide some insight about SynthEyes’ capabilities.

Similar to PFTrack, SynthEyes is a camera and object tracking tool designed for VFX artists. I was able to learn the key functions of PFTrack in about 4 hours with the expert assistance of Dusty Arrington. The UI is relatively intuitive if you’re already familiar with photogrammetry. The downside to PFTrack: for stationary camera solves, you have to perform some advanced mathematics or external CAD work to convert the pixel tracking results to real-world speeds.

Conversely, Adam informed the webinar group that SynthEyes has internal capabilities allowing us to avoid the complicated math/CAD. The downside to SynthEyes: the learning curve. All sane humans report having to devote A LOT of time to learning the program.

That’s where Adam comes in. If sufficient interest exists, he would be willing to launch a course to bring interested parties up to speed. As such, if you’d like to learn how to use SynthEyes for recon, please reach out to Adam to let him know! Thanks for reading, keep exploring!
