I’m finishing up Amped FIVE’s Forensic Image and Video Analysis class today, which has been great. The program and team continue to impress. I’m walking away with lots of great info and techniques, but wanted to share a sweet little gem I picked up that’ll benefit anyone performing video analyses: MediaInfo.

According to their site, MediaInfo is a convenient unified display of the most relevant technical and tag data for video and audio files. It’s free and open-source. You can either install the enormous 7 MB app and right-click files to open the program, or drag and drop files here to get details like:

  • Video format

  • Format settings

  • Encoded application

  • Encoded date

  • Codec info

  • Width / height / aspect ratio

  • Frame rate (should investigate further)

  • Colorspace and details

  • If frames are interlaced

If the video has audio, you’ll get a bunch of that data, too. Fellow recon Dan McLain also brought ExifTool to my attention recently, which provides metadata for photos, video, and audio. In my brief experience, the video data isn't as detailed, but it's a sweet one-stop-shop! As discussed in a prior email, FFprobe is another good one to check out, but again, not usually as detailed as MediaInfo.

Keep exploring!
