Jeff Muttart has had an incredible career...not that it's over. The guy’s been compiling and conducting studies for the past 30 years in an attempt to determine what influences drivers’ responses. His seminal 2003 SAE paper presented mathematical equations to predict response times, and he’s been building on that foundation for the past 20 years.
Jeff's latest and greatest project
The 2003 equations were incorporated into Rec-Tec, and recon polymath Greg Russell worked his magic to create an Excel spreadsheet based on the findings of the paper. In 2009, Jeff compiled a plethora of human factors related research and released an Excel-based tool that eventually became I.DRR (Interactive Driver Response Research).
Earlier this month, Jeff and the talented team at the Driver Research Institute made a huge leap forward in the evolution of the program, moving it to an online portal and rechristening it Response. From the DRI website:
Equipped with over 800 publications, Response is an extensive library of industry research and data, Driver Research Institute’s Response is a cutting-edge software solution that takes the lead in human factors analysis in your investigation. With the most up-to-date and comprehensive sample of peer-reviewed drivers' responses ever compiled, Response provides a reliable baseline for comparing and evaluating the behavior of any subject driver. The software features easy access to all relevant data points, ensuring that your investigation remains focused and efficient. Response sets itself apart through its transparency, well-cited data sources, and overall credibility.
I’ve had a bit of time to experiment with the program, and it’s seriously impressive. What an effort. Jeff does a great job introducing the program in this video. I’d highly recommend giving it a go, which you can do for free with a demo license here.
Thanks for reading along. With gratitude and respect on Veterans Day,
Lou Peck
