As I suspect you’ll agree, there were so many impressive recons at WREX performing high-end testing and offering detailed and novel lectures. Alan Moore and Shawn Harrington are two such people I had the pleasure of learning from, both of whom focused on ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems).
During my recent podcast with Alan, soon to be released, he indicated about half of two-car collisions in 2024 will involve a vehicle with ADAS. As such, it’s a topic we all need to know about. We don’t all have to be ADAS gurus, but according to Alan, we all need to know what ADAS is, what the components are, and how to figure out if a vehicle is so equipped.
Some ADAS resources that will bring you up to speed
Alan teaches Accident Reconstruction, the Autonomous Vehicle and ADAS through SAE (found here). I’m first in line for the next course (well, not the May 8th one…WREX hangover and all). Knowing Alan, this course is sure to be excellent.
Another way to get acquainted with these systems is by reading some recent papers detailing their performance. Shawn Harrington and his group, Forensic Rock, wrote FIVE papers on ADAS performance in 2023 (SAE 2023-01-0011, 0013, 0621, 0622, and 0627). Holy cow, that’s a monumental effort and investment! Many thanks to all involved in those publications.
ADAS is part of our recon future, so I think it’s worth investing some time to acquire a baseline understanding, at the very least.
Thanks for reading along, enjoy the weekend!

P.S. We officially launched ACM acquisition requests at WREX and have since added the option to request a more thorough investigation if there's hope the module can be located outside our salvage network. If you have any VINs to search, you can do so here.
