I had the pleasure of doing a bit of small-vehicle performance testing last week...so small that it would've been really difficult to mount a ScenePro, which is my go-to data acquisition system for such activities. As a result, I switched to a tiny, granted less capable, tool.

My favorite tiny data acquisition system

I've been using Racelogic VBOX Sports for about a decade and love their form, function, and simplicity. They're not much bigger than a deck of cards and have an internal battery and antenna, so you can mount it to anything, fire it up, and collect solid GPS data at 20 Hz (on the old ones) or 10 Hz (on the newer ones). They're also waterproof (IP65). A few years ago, I used one to capture speed and position data while wakeboarding...that was an interesting case. I've also mounted them to motorcycles that've been crashed in a manner of violent ways and haven't managed to break one yet. Owners also get free access to VBOX Test Suite, which is a very capable data analytics platform.

So, if you're looking to add a super versatile data acquisiton tool to your kit that won't break the bank, I can confidently vouch for these little guys. A GoPro paired with the Telemetry Extractor is also a good option, but if you're looking for something super robust with a scientific reputation, the VBOX Sport pulls ahead.

Have a great summer weekend!
